One-year-old Lucas was at his daycare center, enjoying a steamed carrot stick as part of his lunch, when the soft but long piece wedged across his airway. He was able to cough partially, but he couldn't clear it.
His daycare provider, Maria, reached for the Mumany unit kept in the infant room emergency caddy — the center had purchased several after a staff training session on pediatric choking.
One pull, and the carrot came free. Lucas recovered quickly and went back to his lunch.
The daycare center has since purchased Mumany units for every classroom. "We do everything by protocol," Maria said. "Mumany is now part of that protocol. Every classroom, every supply closet, right where we need it."
