It was 4-year-old Dylan's birthday dinner, and he was munching on a chunk of raw apple while waiting for his cake. The wedge-shaped piece was firm and lodged completely in his airway — back blows and Heimlich thrusts from both parents failed to move it.
His dad grabbed the Mumany from the dining room cabinet where they kept the family first-aid kit. First pull — nothing. Second pull — nothing. Third pull — the apple chunk popped out.
Dylan cried, gasped, and then asked if it was time for cake.
"Three pulls felt like forever," his dad said. "But that's what the device is designed for — it keeps working when nothing else will. That birthday cake tasted a little sweeter that night."
